Independence Day Malaysia: Quotes, Wishes, Messages,Greetings

History of Malaysian Independence Day

More than 20,000 people gathered at Padang Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur on the evening of August 30, 1957, to witness the transfer of power from the British. At 11:58 p.m., the prime minister-designate Tunku Abdul Rahman arrived and observed two minutes of darkness with the Alliance Party's youth divisions. The regal song "God Save The Queen" played as the lights were turned back on and the Union Flag in the square was lowered at the stroke of midnight.

As the national anthem Negaraku played, the new Malayan flag was raised. Seven "Merdeka" chants from the audience followed. Later, in a speech, Tunku Abdul Rahman praised the ceremony, calling it the "biggest moment in the lives of the Malayan people." Representatives of the Alliance Party youth presented him with a necklace with an engraved map of Malaya before he addressed the audience in honor of this momentous historical event. 1 AM marked the conclusion of the event. The festivities were transferred to the recently finished Merdeka Stadium early on August 31, 1957. The ceremony, which got underway at 9:30 am, was seen by more than 20,000 people. Leaders of the Malay states, foreign dignitaries, federal cabinet members, and civilians were present.

The Duke of Gloucester, who was the Queen's agent, gave Tunku Abdul Rahman the declaration of independence. After reading the Proclamation of Independence, Tunku concluded by leading the audience in chanting "Merdeka!" seven times. A military band played the national hymn as the Malayan national flag was raised. This was followed by a 21-gun salute, an azan call, and a prayer of thanksgiving in honor of this momentous occasion.

The first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Rahman of Negeri Sembilan, was then ceremoniously installed at Jalan Ampang that day. The inaugural installation feast in his honor was held that evening, and it was followed by a thumping retreat performance and a fireworks display. The founding of the new nation was recognized through sporting events and other occasions.
